For 41 months, patients received 140 mg of silymarin, administered three times a day. The four year survival rate was 39 percent in the placebo group, compared with 58 percent in the milk thistle extract group. The lower death rate was particularly pronounced in the subgroup of patients with cirrhosis.

This study is particularly important for several reasons. Firstly, there were no adverse side effects reported during this study.
