[What is Tribulus terrestris?]

Tribulus terrestris is a vine that has been used as a general tonic (energy) and herbal treatment for impotence, but is found primarily in dietary supplements marketed for increasing testosterone levels in bodybuilders and power athletes. The idea behind tribulus is that it may increase testosterone levels indirectly by raising blood levels of another hormone, luteinizing hormone.

Jose S. Pulido, M.D., Professor of Opthalmology & Molecular Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Alan D. Marmorstein, Ph.D., Professor of Ophthalmology, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine discuss the importance of genetic testing in diagnosing macular degeneration. Three cases are outlined that have been referred to as Adult Onset Foveomacular Dystrophy, Macular Degeneration, and Best Disease. Genetic testing can be used to make these diagnoses and researchers are at the threshold of new and exciting treatments. Over the past few years Dr. Marmorstein’s laboratory has been involved in a study of stem cell models of Best Disease and other retinal degenerative diseases. Details can be found on the NIH web site. DNA is being collected along with skin fibroblasts from patients with Best Disease Adult Vitelliform Dystrophy Autosomal Recessive Bestrophinopathy, autosomal dominant vitreoretinal choroidopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa due to mutations in BEST1. The skin fibroblasts are being reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells which can be differentiated into retinal pigment epithelial cells. This is the cell where Bestrophin, the product of the BEST1 gene is expressed and that’s where the pathogenic problem that results in these diseases occurs. Clinical trials are already underway using iPS cell derived retinal pigment epithelial cells for the treatment of age-related Macular Degeneration. It also allows the consideration of the same process to therapeutically treat Best Disease and Adult Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy, Autosomal Recessive Bestrophinopathy and models of the diseases can be generated of the diseases in the laboratory. This can help with the understanding of the processes that cause the disease and allow for the testing of potential therapeutic compounds to determine if they have an effect on these specific patients.

The health benefits of ginseng have been known for centuries here in Korea.

And now, new scientific research is backing it up.

A recent experiment found that eating this traditional herb may help improve your memory and even play a role in protecting against diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Kim Jiyeon reports.

Historical records from the Joseon Dynasty, dating back as far as the 12th century, show that ginseng was cultivated as a remedy for common ailments.

Fast forward to the present, Korean scientists are discovering more evidence to support the claims found in these historical documents.

A recent experiment compared one group of mice that were suffering from drug-induced dementia and another that had been fed ginseng extract.

That latter group showed an increase in memory function.

The two groups were placed in an enclosed area where one half was well-lit, the other dark and hooked up to an electric shock device.

Mice in general tend to gravitate to darker places, but the ginseng-treated animals were able to learn to resist their instincts longer in order not to get shocked, while the non-ginseng mice gave in quickly.

“Various combinations of plants can be good for the body.

Using certain plant complexes, we saw results of much higher memory regeneration.”

The study also found that animal test-subjects who were fed ginseng extract showed better spatial perception while running through mazes.

It’s another positive effect that Korean oriental medical practitioners feel shows promise for future drugs.

“I expect the development of natural health supplements will yield new benefits.”

Researchers continue to pore over Korea’s medicinal manuals of the past to find chemically active ingredients for future pharmaceuticals.
