[What is bilberry fruit]

Bilberry (Vaccinium Myrtillus L.) is a kind of perennial deciduous or evergreen fruit shrubs, mainly found in subarctic regions of the world as in Sweden, Finland and Ukraine, etc. Bilberries contain dense levels of anthocyanin pigments, which was said popularly to have been used by World War II RAF pilots to sharpen night vision. Epimedium grandiflorum, Epimedium koreanum und Epimedium sagittatum wurden auf die medizinischen Wirkungen untersucht. Auf grund des Inhaltsstoffes Icariin werden einige Epimedium-Arten in der Volksmedizin verwendet. Die medizinischen Wirkungen von Icariin wurden von mehreren Arbeitsgruppen untersucht. Versuche mit Icariin an Ratten zeigen, dass es neurotrophische Effekte verursacht und einen Einfluss auf die Erektion des Rattenpenis besitzt. Diese Versuche führen dazu, diese Stimulanzwirkung auch beim Menschen zu vermuten. Es wird ausdrücklich davor gewarnt, Epimedium-Arten für den Menschen als stimulierendes Mittel einzusetzen, denn es gibt noch keine Gefahrenabschätzung. Dagegen wird ausdrücklich davor gewarnt, Getränke oder Nahrungsmittel Epimedium-Auszügen während der Schwangerschaft und der Stillzeit zu verwenden.

J. A. Duke und E. S. Ayensu schreiben in Medicinal Plants of China, dass die Einnahme von Extrakten aus den Blättern von Epimedium grandiflorum die Häufigkeit von Kopulationen bei Tieren erhöht, aber dies sind rein Ergebnisse aus Tierversuchen.
