[What is elderberry extract?]

Elderberry extract comes from the fruit of the Sambucus nigra or Black Elder, a species found in Europe, Western Asia, North Africa, and North America. Called “the medicine chest of the common people,” Elder flowers, berries, leaves, bark, and roots have all been used for centuries in traditional folk medicines.Elder fruit contains vitamins A, B and C, flavonoids, tannins, carotenoids, and amino acids. Elderberry is believed to possess therapeutic uses as an anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and immuno-stimulant.

Full Recipe

1/2c pumpkin seeds*
1-2tsp water if needed
——–
Chili Lime: Juice of 1/2 lime, 1-2tbsp chili powder, 1-2tsp cayenne pepper, 1/2tsp salt (optional)

Curry Ginger: 2tsp curry powder, 1tsp cumin, 1tsp ground ginger, 1/2tsp turmeric, 1/2tsp salt (optional)

Salt & Pepper: 1-2tsp salt, 2-3tsp black pepper

Sugar & Spice: 1-2tbsp sugar, 2tsp cinnamon, 1tsp nutmeg, 1/2tsp clove, 1/2tsp allspice

Mix seeds w/chosen seasonings, add water until just dissolved.
Marinate 30min.
Preheat oven to 400.
Spread seeds in single layer on parchment-lined baking sheet(s).
Bake 20-25min, let cool.
For Sugar & Spice: Seeds will be stuck together in melted sugar.
Cool completely, lift edges of parchment and fold gently inward.
Pour into bowl and break apart w/handle of wooden spoon.

*A medium-large pumpkin should give you ~2c of seeds. (I used two small ones.)

Sprayable Antibacterial Film: A Nanosilver Composite

ABSTRACT: Recent studies suggest that cell phones are one of the surfaces with the most bacteria we encounter in our day, where it was shown that 1 in 6 cellphones are contaminated with fecal matter (Song). Silver nanoparticles have been shown to be highly efficient antibacterial nanoparticles, largely due to the oxidation and release of silver ions (Ferrer, Guo). Composite materials with antibacterial polymers and silver nanoparticles expand the applications of silver nanoparticles for antibacterial purposes, especially because they can be used as coatings for a variety of applications. These composites are beneficial because the nanoparticles can prevent bacterial growth while the polymer can prevent bacterial adhesion. This design takes advantage of the inherent antibacterial properties of chitosan, a polysaccharide extracted from shrimp shells, and the silver nanoparticles to produce a chitosan based polymeric coating with enhanced antibacterial properties. In the design, the properties of the sprayable solution, the nanoparticle formation kinetics and the film properties were studied. We also report on the results from the preliminary prototyping and antibacterial testing of films designed to be applied to the Aluminum back of the iPhone 5.
